Description
Gate Lodge is a residential building in Neo-classical style with rounded corners and three triangular pediments adorning its upper facade. The structure has a compact rectangular floor plan and sits along Mount Austin Road in Victoria Peak Garden.
History
The building was constructed between 1900 and 1902 and served as quarters for the keeper of Mountain Lodge. This former summer residence of Hong Kong governors was later demolished.
Culture
This building shows British colonial architecture with Renaissance details and was designed as living space for estate staff. The way it was constructed follows the traditional methods of that era.
Practical
The building is located in Victoria Peak Garden and now serves as an office site for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Visitors can view it from Mount Austin Road, with the surrounding area offering good walking paths and clear landmarks.
Did you know?
This is the sole surviving element of the former Mountain Lodge complex, which was demolished in 1946. The building received protected monument status in 1995.
