Jardine Matheson Building Tianjin, British colonial trading building in Heping District, China

The Jardine Matheson Building is a two-story mixed-structure building completed in 1921 at 157 Jiefang North Road, formerly Victoria Road in the British concession. Its layout is symmetrical, with the entrance at the centre of the facade flanked by colossal Corinthian columns. The exterior is restrained and simple, while the interior was built on a luxurious scale.

Jardine Matheson opened its Tianjin office in 1867, upgraded it to a branch in 1881, and built this two-story headquarters in 1921 on Victoria Road in the British concession. On 1 July 1936 the Deutsche Bank Tianjin branch moved in. The building is now a Tianjin cultural relic and a special-protection historic structure.

The building's name comes from Jardine Matheson, the Scottish firm founded in Guangzhou in 1832 that opened its Tianjin office in 1867; the Chinese name, Yihe Yanghang, is the firm's historical Chinese trade name. The comprador Tang Tingxu managed money, supplies and shipping here before joining Li Hongzhang's Self-Strengthening Movement. Since 1936 the Deutsche Bank Tianjin branch and later Weihai City Commercial Bank have occupied the premises.

The building stands at 157 Jiefang North Road (formerly Victoria Road) in Heping District, in the former British concession. It is a two-story structure, so a look at the facade from street level takes little time. The ground floor is occupied by Weihai City Commercial Bank and other tenants, so visits are limited to the exterior.

The building's interior was designed to be luxurious while the exterior stayed plain, and since 1936 it has housed other banks: the Deutsch-Asiatische Bank moved in on 1 July 1936, and today Weihai City Commercial Bank and others occupy it. Jardine Matheson itself began in Guangzhou's Shamian Island in 1832 and moved its head office to Hong Kong in 1841.
