Tianjin Museum, Cultural museum in Tianjin, China.
Tianjin Museum is a city history and art museum inside the Tianjin Cultural Center, holding Chinese objects spanning several thousand years. Its galleries cover bronzeware, ceramics, jade, paintings, calligraphy, and historical documents arranged across multiple floors.
The museum was founded in 1918 by a local educator who wanted to gather and protect Chinese cultural objects. It moved several times over the following decades before settling in its current building in 2012.
The museum holds a core collection assembled by a local scholar in the early 20th century, focused on Chinese calligraphy and painting. These works are seen in Tianjin as a foundation of the city's artistic life, and many residents visit them as a reference point for traditional art.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and sits inside the Cultural Center, which is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding park. Plan enough time to walk through all floors, as the collections are spread across a large building.
The building was designed by a Japanese architecture firm and its roof follows the shape of a swan with open wings, a detail that only becomes clear when seen from above or from a distance. Most visitors standing at the entrance do not notice this until they see a photograph of the full structure.
