Wang Hai Lou Catholic Church, Gothic Revival Catholic church in Hebei District, China
Wang Hai Lou is a Gothic Revival cathedral in Tianjin built with stone and brick featuring pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and supporting buttresses typical of its architectural style. The building occupies a substantial plot in the central district with multiple interior spaces and chambers arranged around its main sanctuary.
The structure was constructed between 1913 and 1916 to serve as the principal cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Tianjin. Bricks were specially imported from French manufacturing centers, reflecting the global trade connections of that period.
The church has long served as a gathering place for diverse worshippers in Tianjin, hosting congregations that span local and international communities. Today it continues to serve people from various backgrounds who come together for multilingual religious services.
The building is accessible by public transportation throughout Tianjin and remains open for visitors on a regular basis. Visitors should be aware that access may be limited during religious ceremonies and on special feast days.
Notably, nearly all building materials, especially the bricks, were transported long distances from French production facilities to China for this project. This complex logistics effort in the early 20th century required significant coordination and expense, underscoring how important the project was at that time.
