Hong Kong Palace Museum, Museum in West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Palace Museum is a history and art museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District, covering roughly 30,500 square meters with two exhibition halls, a 400-seat theatre, a restaurant and a gift shop inside a contemporary building. The permanent collection holds over 900 objects from Beijing's Palace Museum, complemented by rotating loans and thematic exhibitions.
The institution opened on July 3, 2022, to mark the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's handover to China, after construction work had started in April 2019. Collaboration with the Forbidden City in Beijing enabled the transfer of art treasures rarely seen outside mainland China before.
The nine galleries present ceramics, calligraphy and imperial paintings from different Chinese dynasties, allowing visitors to follow how artistic styles changed across centuries. Rotating special exhibitions regularly bring other collections from international museums to Hong Kong, broadening the offer beyond Chinese court art.
You reach the building via Kowloon station and follow signage through the cultural district along the waterfront promenade. Opening hours run from 10 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday, until 8 pm on weekends, with Tuesday as the weekly rest day.
The architecture draws inspiration from traditional Chinese bronze vessels called ding and the boat-shaped yuanbao silver ingots, yet blends these forms with glass and concrete elements from the present day. Several inner courtyards create naturally lit zones between exhibition floors, adding calm transitional spaces to the modern structure.
