M+, Art museum in West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong.
M+ is a contemporary art museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District in Hong Kong. The building forms an inverted T shape with a podium and tower housing thirty-three galleries across 17,000 square meters (183,000 square feet).
The institution opened in November 2021 following an architectural competition won by Herzog & de Meuron with Farrells in 2012. Construction began in 2014 and brought forth one of the largest cultural facilities in the region.
The name combines M for museum with the plus sign as a symbol of openness toward new perspectives and shifting artistic forms of expression. Visitors encounter works from Hong Kong and Asia alongside international positions in spaces that blend contemporary design with local craft tradition.
Some areas such as the Mediatheque and the Roof Garden remain accessible without a ticket, while galleries require general admission. The building is open from Tuesday to Sunday and offers orientation in multiple languages at reception.
The outer facade carries an LED system that displays moving image works visible from the opposite shore of Victoria Harbour. The terracotta panels on the facade echo forms of traditional Chinese roof tiles and give the modern structure a regional touch.
