New Garden

The New Garden is an expansive park north of Potsdam situated between two lakes, featuring classical buildings and open green spaces throughout. The grounds include several historic palaces and smaller structures woven into the landscape.

A Prussian ruler commissioned this park in the late 1700s, drawing inspiration from English garden design traditions popular at that time. Over the following decades the site expanded with new buildings and further landscaping work.

The garden displays royal residences from different periods of Prussian rule, showing how each building reflected the tastes and power of its time. Visitors walking through can observe how the spaces were designed for royal life and leisure.

The grounds are freely accessible during daylight hours from multiple entry points around the perimeter. There are many walking paths throughout that allow visitors to explore at their own pace and enjoy the different areas.

Below one of the structures lies an underground passageway designed to resemble ancient temple ruins, offering visitors a hidden glimpse into creative royal architecture. This concealed element reveals the playful imagination behind some royal building projects.
