Villa Quandt, 19th-century villa in Nauener Vorstadt, Potsdam, Germany.
Villa Quandt is a two-story brick residential building from around the 1820s in Nauener Vorstadt, featuring traditional plasterwork and decorative elements on its facades. Today it stands as an example of residential architecture from that period and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin.
The building was constructed in the first half of the 19th century and passed through several owners, including industrialist Günter Quandt who gave it his name. After the Second World War it served under Soviet military administration until 1993, when its use changed.
Since 2007 the building houses the Theodor Fontane Archive, serving as a center where people engage with works from Brandenburg's literary tradition. The rooms show how historic residential buildings function today as active places for preserving and sharing knowledge.
Access to the building is available through scheduled guided tours, so visitors should arrange in advance. Its location in Nauener Vorstadt makes it easy to combine with other sights in Potsdam's historic center.
The building was successfully repurposed as an archive while keeping its original structural elements intact. This adaptation shows how older houses can take on new functions without losing their connection to the past.
