Autostadt, Automobile museum in Germany
Autostadt is a visitor complex built next to the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, displaying vehicles and brands that belong to the Volkswagen Group. The grounds cover separate brand pavilions, exhibition halls, a mobility museum, and a canal flanked by two glass towers used to store new cars awaiting delivery.
The Autostadt opened in 2000, timed to coincide with the World Expo held in Hanover that year, and was created to present the Volkswagen Group and its many brands to a broad public. It was built on former industrial land next to the Wolfsburg plant, which itself dates back to 1938.
Wolfsburg grew alongside the Volkswagen factory, and the Autostadt sits at the heart of that connection, making it a place where the city's story and the car industry overlap. Visitors can feel this bond as they walk between the pavilions, each dedicated to a different brand within the group.
The site is large and spread across outdoor and indoor spaces, so comfortable shoes and a full day are worth planning for. Checking the website before your visit helps, as temporary exhibitions and driving experiences change regularly throughout the year.
Customers who buy a new Volkswagen can choose to pick up their car directly at the Autostadt, watching it emerge from one of the two glass towers as part of a delivery ceremony. The towers stand around 200 feet (60 meters) tall and can hold up to 800 vehicles at a time.
