Volkswagen Arena, Football stadium in Wolfsburg, Germany
Volkswagen Arena is a two-tier football stadium in Wolfsburg's Allerpark, with a surrounding promenade and a translucent PVC membrane roof carried by 32 radial trusses, each 40 metres long. The lower tier is inclined at about 25 degrees, the upper at 40 degrees, and all seats are covered. Its glass facade carries the lettering "VOLKSWAGEN ARENA".
VfL Wolfsburg's 1997 promotion to the Bundesliga made the old VfL-Stadion am Elsterweg inadequate, and construction of a new ground began in 2001 under the working name "Arena an der Berliner Brücke". Built by Wolfsburg AG, jointly owned by the city and the Volkswagen Group, it was completed in 19 months and opened on 13 December 2002 at a cost of €53 million. The first match was against VfB Stuttgart, and the first international fixture, Germany against Canada, followed in June 2003.
The stadium is home to VfL Wolfsburg, and its name changes to VfL Wolfsburg Arena for UEFA matches because of sponsorship rules. The Skylounge above the stand, with 35 seats, is used by the Wolfsburg registry office for weddings. The first international match here was Germany against Canada in June 2003.
The stadium lies in the Allerpark by the Mittellandkanal, next to the Volkswagen factory and Autostadt. All 30,000 places are covered, and the guest block has its own kiosks and toilets. The Skylounge above the stand seats 35 and is also used for events and weddings.
The roof's 32 radial trusses, each 40 metres long, carry a translucent PVC membrane of 15,000 square metres; the light it lets through supports the natural growth of the pitch grass. In 2017 the arena became the first Bundesliga stadium lit entirely by LED floodlights.
