Wolfsburg, Planned industrial city in Lower Saxony, Germany
Wolfsburg is a planned industrial city in Lower Saxony along the Mittelland Canal. The city divides into several neighborhoods with residential areas, industrial zones, and wide green spaces.
The city was established in 1938 as a housing settlement for Volkswagen factory workers on the site of a small village. After World War II, it grew into the fifth-largest city in Lower Saxony.
The city takes its name from Wolfsburg Castle, a medieval fortress first mentioned in the 13th century that now serves as a landmark in the center. Residents and visitors use the surrounding squares and parks for leisure activities and weekend walks.
The main railway station offers direct connections to Berlin, Hanover, and other major cities in Germany. Many areas of the city can be explored on foot or by bicycle.
The Phaeno Science Center was designed by Zaha Hadid and appears to float above the ground on cone-shaped supports. The concrete and glass architecture draws visitors from across Europe.
