Burg Neuhaus, Water castle in Wolfsburg, Germany
Burg Neuhaus is a water castle in Wolfsburg built on the River Aller with four wings surrounding an inner courtyard and featuring Renaissance details throughout its structure. Stone figures guard the entrance while water channels surround the entire complex.
The castle was founded in 1371 to monitor trade routes crossing the River Aller and served as an important military stronghold. It survived the Thirty Years' War without major damage and retained its fortified status.
Since 2000, artists have worked in studios within the castle, creating paintings, drawings, photographs, and objects that visitors can see during their walk through the rooms and courtyard.
The castle is accessible on foot from the town via a paved path and sturdy shoes are recommended, especially when the ground is wet. Outdoor areas are open to walk around, though visiting the interior rooms and artist studios requires checking operating times beforehand.
An old oak tree in the courtyard hosts annual wine festivals where visitors can taste selected wines amid the medieval stone walls. This tradition brings together history and local flavors in an unexpected way.
