Burg Neuhaus, Water castle in Wolfsburg, Germany
Burg Neuhaus is a water castle in Wolfsburg, set on the River Aller, with four wings enclosing a central courtyard and Renaissance details visible on the facades and doorways. Stone figures stand at the entrance, and water channels run around the whole complex.
The castle was founded in 1371 to watch over trade routes crossing the River Aller and served as a key military post in the region. It came through the Thirty Years' War without major damage and kept its fortified character into modern times.
Since 2000, artists have worked in studios inside the castle, producing paintings, drawings, photographs, and objects that visitors can see during a walk through the rooms and courtyard. The mix of old stone walls and ongoing creative work gives every visit a slightly different feel.
The castle is reachable on foot from town along a paved path, and sturdy shoes help when the ground is wet. The outdoor areas are free to walk around, but visiting the interior rooms and artist studios requires checking opening times in advance.
An old oak tree in the courtyard is the setting for an annual wine festival where visitors can taste selected wines surrounded by medieval stone walls. This tradition ties the historic setting of the castle to a social summer event in a way that few visitors expect.
