Allersee, lake
The Allersee is a large reservoir in Wolfsburg that stretches about 1230 meters (4040 feet) long and is nearly a quarter mile wide, offering plenty of space for activities. A sandy beach almost a kilometer long lines the shore, with broad pathways for walking, biking, and skating nearby.
The Allersee was created in 1969 by building a dam and redirecting the Aller River. It officially opened in 1970, marking the start of its transformation into a leisure and sports area for the city.
The name Allersee comes from the Aller River, which was redirected to create this body of water. Today, local people and visitors use it as a gathering place for leisure and water sports, where families swim, sail, and spend time together.
The water is monitored to high European standards and temperature can be checked through a local app. From May to October, a rescue group watches over the lake to keep it safe for swimming.
On the southern side, clubs organize sailing races and lessons in activities like canoeing and stand-up paddling. Visitors can rent a stand-up paddleboard right on the spot and try these water sports themselves.
