AutoMuseum Volkswagen, Automobile museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.
AutoMuseum Volkswagen is an automobile museum in a converted textile factory near the Volkswagen manufacturing plant in Wolfsburg, displaying around 130 vehicles across approximately 5,000 square meters. The collection spans from early prototypes through experimental cars to production models that document the brand's evolution.
The museum opened on 25 April 1985 and later moved into a defunct textile factory building. It became a nonprofit foundation called Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen in January 1992.
The name "Volkswagen" means "people's car" and reflects the mission to create affordable vehicles for ordinary families. The collection on display shows how this vision shaped different models throughout generations.
The museum is located at Dieselstraße 35 in Wolfsburg and is open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00. Its proximity to the Volkswagen manufacturing plant makes it easy to access, and visitors should plan for one to two hours to explore the full collection.
The collection includes experimental vehicles and special editions that never reached mass production, showing alternative paths in automotive development. These prototypes reveal how many ideas were tested before successful models reached the market.
