Scent Tunnel, Installation artwork in Autostadt, Wolfsburg, Germany
The Scent Tunnel is an artistic installation with over 2000 potted plants arranged in three hollow tubes that rotate above a steel grating walkway. The tubes spin at different speeds, constantly creating new patterns of colors and scents.
Danish artist Olafur Eliasson designed this botanical installation in 2000 as part of the Autostadt development. The work transformed a formerly industrial space into an artistic experience site.
The installation connects visitors with nature through changing seasons. People walk through the tunnel and experience fragrant plants like lavender and sage, with the aroma shifting as they move forward.
The tunnel is accessible from April through September and offers a pleasant experience in mild weather. Visitors should allow enough time to walk slowly through and fully notice the changing scents.
The three tubes move completely independently from each other, creating an ever-shifting composition of colors. This means no two visits offer the same experience, even though the plants and scents remain the same.
