Bacharacher Werth, Sacred grove on Rhine River island in Bacharach, Germany
The Bacharacher Werth is a wooded island in the Rhine near Bacharach, covered with forests and vineyards. The northern part shows the natural floodplain vegetation, while grapevines cover the southern section.
The island first appears in written records in 1593 when a count confirmed ownership to a local landowner. Since then it has been used mainly for wine production.
The island is home to a working vineyard that focuses on growing Riesling grapes in the traditional Rhine Valley way. You can see the vines on the southern part and get a sense of how wine cultivation has shaped life here for centuries.
The northern forest area is protected and best viewed from a distance or nearby paths. The southern vineyard section is sometimes accessible if you arrange a visit with the winery in advance.
The island served as a filming location for a 1975 film when a villa still stood on it. That building is gone now, but the island carries this piece of cinema history.
