Ferberturm

The Ferberturm is a stone structure from the late 19th century standing on one of Gera's highest points, with an observation platform offering views across the southern parts of the city. Beyond the viewing deck, the building houses a dining operation that has been integrated into the site for many decades.

Dr. Moritz Rudolf Ferber initiated construction of this stone tower in 1874, completing the project in 1875 and establishing a local landmark in Thuringia. The addition of a restaurant around 1948 gave the site a new function beyond simple observation.

The tower bears its founder's name and functions as a gathering place where people enjoy views and dine together at the integrated restaurant. This combination of observation and dining draws local residents and visitors seeking a social meeting spot in the city.

Visitors should check opening hours beforehand, as the site occasionally closes for private events. The best times to visit are in early morning or late afternoon when visibility across the city is particularly clear.

The tower actually stands only about 70 feet (21 meters) tall, but its elevated position on a city hilltop makes it appear far more commanding than other structures nearby. This optical effect is a surprising feature that catches visitors when they arrive.
