Ettelsberg, Mountain summit in Hesse, Germany
Ettelsberg is a mountain summit in the Upland region of Hesse, Germany, reaching about 838 meters above sea level. The top area opens into meadows and cleared slopes where ski runs, lifts, and cross-country trails have been laid out across the surrounding mixed forest.
From the 1980s onward, the Ettelsberg was gradually developed into a winter sports area, with lifts and slopes built across its upper flanks. Before that, the summit was mainly a local walking destination with no dedicated sports facilities.
The Ettelsberg draws day-trippers and outdoor lovers from across northern Hesse, especially on weekends. In winter, the ski lifts and slopes define the mood of the summit, while summer turns it into a place for walks and open-air views.
The summit is reachable on foot via marked trails from nearby villages, and some routes can be reached by public transit from the surrounding towns. In winter, the slopes can get busy on weekends, so arriving early in the day is a good idea.
A snow-making system was installed here in 2007, which is relatively uncommon for a ski area at this modest elevation in Germany. This setup allows the slopes to open even in winters when natural snowfall is scarce.
