Hillestausee, architectural structure
Hillestausee is a roughly 8.5-hectare lake in the Rothaar Mountains near Winterberg, surrounded by meadows and forests with calm water suitable for swimming. The shoreline is lined with vegetation, and the lake is held back by the Hillebachtalsperre dam, which extends about 250 meters.
The lake was created in 1979 through damming of the Hillebach valley and became a water storage facility for the region. Its formation enabled water supply while also allowing development into a recreation area for local residents.
The lake attracts local residents who come regularly to enjoy nature or spend time with family in a relaxed setting. This makes the area an important gathering place for people seeking recreation and rest away from daily routines.
The lake is family-friendly with playgrounds, a sandy beach, and wide paths for walking and cycling available year-round. In summer a water skiing facility operates, while anglers can fish from April through October with two rods per person if they have a fishing license.
The water skiing facility is only installed during summer and attracts athletes from across the region, making the lake a dynamic destination. In winter the surrounding area transforms into skiing and sledding terrain, giving the location a completely different character depending on the season.
