Große Kirche, Protestant church in Steinfurt, Germany
Große Kirche stands on ancient foundations and features a carved wooden screen from 1487 that divides the choir area from the main worship space. The building has been modified and expanded over centuries to serve the changing needs of the congregation.
The site originally held a wooden chapel in the 9th century, later replaced by a stone building. In 1222, a religious community settled here, which shaped the structure and importance of the place for centuries to come.
The name simply reflects its role as the main church building in town. Today it serves the local Protestant community, and visitors can observe how people gather here regularly for worship and community events.
The church is best reached on foot, as it sits centrally in town and is easy to locate. Regular worship services happen on Sundays, and visitors should check beforehand if there are guided tours or special viewing times available.
A severe storm in 1990 caused major damage, with the tower collapsing and harming the interior vault and organ. The lengthy restoration that followed modernized many interior elements while carefully preserving the historical character.
