Steinfurt, District capital in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Steinfurt is a district capital in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, made up of two main parts: Borghorst in the west and Burgsteinfurt in the east. Residential neighborhoods spread around historic cores with churches, pedestrian streets, and parks, while fields and smaller hamlets occupy the surrounding countryside.
The two districts existed separately for centuries until a municipal reform in 1975 united them into the present town. At the same time, parts of neighboring municipalities were incorporated and Tecklenburg district was dissolved.
The name combines stone with an old ford across the Aa river that once divided the two settlements. Residents today move freely between Borghorst and Burgsteinfurt, though each district keeps its own market square and local shops.
Both districts can be explored on foot or by bicycle, as main facilities lie close together. Buses connect the two parts and also run to surrounding villages and neighboring towns.
A concert gallery inside Bagno Park is considered Europe's only freestanding classical music hall and attracts musicians from many countries. The surrounding park holds an extensive lake system with winding paths and two restaurants along the waterfront.
