Johanniterkommende Steinfurt

Johanniterkommende Steinfurt is a monastery complex with multiple buildings that developed over several centuries. The courtyard is enclosed by walls and contains various structures from different periods that together form a self-contained compound.

The complex was founded in the 12th century and became the main seat of the Johanniter Order in Westphalia and Friesland. Buildings were added gradually over the following centuries, with each period leaving its own structures behind.

The name refers to the religious order that established this place and carried out its mission here for centuries. Visitors can still see traces of this community in how the buildings are arranged and how the courtyard is organized.

The site is located in the town of Steinfurt and is easily accessible on foot once you know where to find it. It makes sense to check beforehand which days visits are possible, as the complex is still partly used as residential space today.

The oldest residence of the Komtur was built in the late 13th century and is one of the longest-standing buildings on the grounds. This house shows how early residents lived and offers a glimpse into the original structure of the order.
