Rolling Horse, Contemporary sculpture at Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Germany
Rolling Horse is an art sculpture at Berlin Central Station that depicts a horse figure within a railway wheel, measuring approximately 10 meters tall and 9 meters wide. The construction combines steel, aluminium, plastic, glass, and stone into a layered artwork that integrates with the modern railway station architecture.
The artwork emerged from a modern artistic vision for the Central Station and engages in dialogue with the site. The sculpture's base incorporates glass display areas that reveal remnants of the former Lehrter Bahnhof, making the railway history of the location visible to viewers.
The four rotating face masks at the shoulder area represent the seasons and invite visitors to explore the artistic interpretation of natural cycles. These spinning elements create a connection between movement and the passage of time in the heart of the city.
The sculpture is located in the entry area of the Central Station and is easily accessible on foot with plenty of space to view it from different angles. Two 30-meter steel rails extend from its base, illuminated by blue floor lights that mark the pathway to the artwork.
The structure weighs around 35 tons and is built entirely from industrial materials like polished steel and aluminium, emphasizing the tension between technical materiality and organic horse form. This combination of heavy weight and fluid shape creates visual tension that appears different from various viewing angles.
