Futurium, Research institute and museum in Berlin-Mitte, Germany
Futurium is a three-story glass and metal building in central Berlin that combines exhibition spaces, laboratories, and discussion forums across about 3,200 square meters. The rooms are designed so visitors can explore and understand different scenarios for the coming decades themselves.
The building opened in 2019 near the Spreebogen as Germany's first institution dedicated to studying future developments. It was built in a location shaped by Berlin's history, now reoriented toward exploring what comes next.
The exhibition spaces explore three central questions: how we want to live together, how we understand nature, and which technologies will shape our future. Visitors engage with these themes through interactive stations that encourage experimentation and reflection.
Visitors should know that the spaces are designed for hands-on interaction and need time to explore. Comfortable shoes and an openness to trying out technology help with understanding the exhibition.
The basement functions as both workshop and laboratory, where visitors can use 3D printers and laser cutters to create their own projects. This chance to take ideas into your hands and test them directly sets the place apart from typical exhibitions.
