Schalksburg, Medieval castle ruins in Porta Westfalica, Germany
Schalksburg is a castle ruin located on elevated ground in Porta Westfalica with views across the surrounding North Rhine-Westphalia landscape. The remaining stone foundations and walls sit on a hilltop from which one can see far across the valley.
The castle was under the control of Duke Bernhard II of Saxony in the early 11th century and was known by the names Scalaborg or Schalarborg at that time. In 1679, French troops destroyed the fortification, after which the castle was abandoned.
The ruins show how castles were built in this region and the power that local rulers held over their territories. Visitors can still see how the structure would have commanded the valley below.
Access to the ruins is possible on foot but requires caution on uneven ground and steep paths. The site is best visited during dry weather when the ground is stable and visibility across the landscape remains clear.
Following its destruction by French troops, parts of the abandoned fortress later became the foundation for new settlements such as Hausberge. This shift from medieval stronghold to new communities shows how land was repurposed over the centuries.
