Dome greenhouse, Geodesic dome greenhouse in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The dome greenhouse spans 36 meters across and consists of triangular acrylic glass panels held up by an external metal framework. A system of metal struts supports the roof and operates automated windows that allow air to flow through the structure.
This greenhouse was built in 1974-1975 based on designs by Georg Lippsmeier and Partner working with Karl Krass. The geodesic dome design represented an innovative architectural solution of that era for creating large open spaces.
The structure sits within the Botanical Garden of Heinrich Heine University, where visitors come to learn about diverse plant species from around the world. You can observe how researchers cultivate tropical and exotic plants in this controlled setting.
The interior can be warm and humid, especially when plants are watered or during peak growing seasons. Plan to wear light clothing and take time to wander through the different plant zones at a comfortable pace.
The outward-curved acrylic panels catch sunlight from different angles throughout the day, providing consistent light exposure to plants inside. This unique shape means that even in the deeper areas of the interior, plants receive adequate light for growth.
