Oberes Schloss

Oberes Schloss sits on a cone-shaped hilltop, with the White Elster river forming a natural boundary along its southern and western sides. The complex comprises multiple building sections connected by passageways and staircases.

The fortress was founded in the early 13th century by the Vogts of Weida and Plauen. Over subsequent centuries it underwent repeated renovation and expansion, which explains the range of architectural styles found throughout.

The rooms display decorative details and furnishings that reflect different periods layered together. You can see how various styles overlap and tell the story of the place through its interior design.

The castle is accessible by public transport, and exploring the grounds is best done on foot. Wear comfortable walking shoes since the paths lead uphill and can be uneven.

The fortress contains a rare double chapel from the 12th century, an architectural feature that appears only a few times in Thuringia. This structure demonstrates an unusual religious and construction solution from medieval times.
