The castle sits on a 50-meter high conical mountain, shaped by the White Elster river on its southern and western sides.
The first documented mentions of Oberes Schloss date from 1209 and 1225, when the Vogts of Weida and Plauen constructed the fortress.
The interior rooms display architectural elements from five periods: Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Rococo, with detailed stucco decorations.
The castle museum opens Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with admission prices of 6 euros for adults and 2.50 euros for reduced rates.
The castle contains a rare Romanesque double chapel from 1188, one of only three such structures in Thuringia.
