Schloss Philippsthal, Baroque castle in Philippsthal (Werra), Germany
Schloss Philippsthal is a Baroque estate in Philippsthal an der Werra with three wings enclosing a trapezoidal inner courtyard. The building currently serves municipal administration, medical practices, senior residences, and dining facilities.
Landgrave Philipp von Hessen-Philippsthal commissioned the castle in 1685 on the site of the former Kreuzberg monastery. The property was built as an expression of princely power in a newly established territory.
The chapel interior features Baroque decorations that remain visible today in their original form. Visitors can observe the craftsmanship of the 17th century here.
Public access varies by area since the castle contains multiple private and commercial spaces. It is advisable to check in advance which parts are open to visitors and their visiting hours.
A hidden treasure of the castle is the old orangery in the park, connected to the main building by a tree-lined avenue. Today this charming pavilion serves as a wedding hall and shows how the gardens once hosted celebrations.
