Vogelpark Heiligenkirchen, Bird park and zoo in Detmold, Germany
Vogelpark Heiligenkirchen is a zoo located on a large property that houses a thousand animals representing hundreds of bird species plus other creatures like pelicans, storks, cranes, peacocks, toucans, and primates. The grounds include flower gardens and pathways that lead through different sections where visitors can observe the animals in their enclosures.
Kurt Eckstein founded the facility in 1969, starting with his private collection of birds that eventually opened to the public. Over time the grounds expanded and transformed from a single person's passion into a larger conservation operation.
The park allows visitors to observe birds from many parts of the world up close, giving a sense of how diverse bird species really are. The grounds show how animals can live in thoughtfully designed spaces that reflect their natural habitats.
The grounds are easy to walk through, with paths leading through all areas and plenty of spots to stop and look around. Wear comfortable shoes and plan for sun exposure on warm days, as much of the property is open with limited shade.
Visitors can walk into an aviary filled with hundreds of parakeets and hold parrots during keeper demonstrations. Getting to touch and hold birds this way stays in peoples' minds long after they leave.
