Schloss Großsachsenheim, Renaissance castle in Sachsenheim, Germany
Schloss Großsachsenheim is a Renaissance structure with a twelve-sided exterior and square inner courtyard, built from rough stone and sandstone details. The complex includes multiple buildings, among them a grain storage facility with a round tower and grounds containing period garden features.
The castle was built around 1400 for the Lords of Sachsenheim and underwent major reconstruction in 1544 following a fire two years earlier. This rebuilding shaped much of its present-day appearance.
The buildings within show how people lived across different periods, particularly through the grain storage structure with its distinctive round tower. The maintained grounds with its tea house invite wandering and convey a sense of daily life from earlier eras.
The castle now houses the city administration and is open to visitors, with guided tours available. The site can be explored on foot and the grounds with their gardens allow time to linger.
The entrance displays a round arch featuring two different coats of arms of Sachsenheim, documenting the rebuilding of 1544. These details remain visible today and tell the story of the place's past.
