Peilturm Kap Arkona, Radio tower at Cape Arkona, Germany
Peilturm Kap Arkona is a brick tower with an observation platform located on the northern tip of Rügen island where it overlooks the Baltic Sea coast. A staircase inside leads up to the viewing area, from which the surrounding coastline and water are visible in all directions.
Built in 1927 for German naval radio operations, the tower served ships navigating the Baltic Sea during the first half of the 20th century. After World War II, the building changed purposes several times and eventually became a destination for visitors and a space for local commerce.
The tower now houses a shop selling crafts and alpaca wool products that show how the region connects traditional skills with contemporary commerce. Visitors can see how local makers and merchants use this space to share their work.
Climbing to the viewing platform requires walking up a set of interior stairs that are manageable for visitors with basic fitness levels. Wearing comfortable shoes is recommended since reaching the top involves climbing steps throughout.
The tower originally functioned as a listening station that monitored radio signals crossing the Baltic Sea, a detail many visitors overlook. This military purpose explains why the structure was positioned on this specific headland with such commanding views.
