Cape Arkona Lighthouses, Light station complex in Putgarten, Germany.
The Cape Arkona Lighthouses form a complex of two lighthouses and a maritime radio tower on the northern tip of Rügen Island. The Schinkel Tower is an octagonal stone structure, while the newer round tower stands beside it, both dominating the landscape of the Wittow Peninsula.
The Schinkel Tower was built between 1826 and 1829 and served as the main lighthouse until 1902 when the new round tower took over operations. A radio station was added in 1927, transforming the complex into a modern navigation center.
The Schinkel Tower now serves as a civil registry where couples celebrate weddings at the northernmost point of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The location has become a popular wedding destination, blending historic architecture with modern celebrations.
Climbing 164 steps leads to an observation platform with views across the Baltic Sea and the Wittow Peninsula. The best time to visit is in clear weather when the view stretches across the coastline.
The 1927 radio station houses the Rügen Museum of Prehistoric History, displaying archaeological finds from different periods across multiple floors. This combination of maritime history and prehistoric artifacts makes the site truly distinctive.
