Siebenschneiderstein, Natural monument near Gellort cliffs, Putgarten, Germany.
The Siebenschneiderstein is a massive granite block with a volume of roughly 61 cubic meters and weighing about 165 tons. It sits near the Gellort cliffs overlooking the Baltic Sea.
During the last ice age, glacial movements pushed this massive block from Scandinavia across hundreds of kilometers to Rügen Island. It was left behind as the ice retreated from the coast.
The stone takes its name from an old story about seven tailors who once found space together on its surface. This tale shapes how locals think about the place and pass it on to visitors.
The boulder sits about 1 kilometer northwest of Cape Arkona and is reached via coastal walking paths along the cliff edge. Wear sturdy shoes, as the paths along the cliffs can be slippery and uneven.
It is the fourth largest erratic boulder on Rügen Island and is protected as a geotope. Its position just 30 meters from the cliff edge shows how coastal landscapes are constantly changing.
