Stevns Municipality, Municipality in Zealand, Denmark
Stevns Municipality is an administrative area in southeastern Zealand, Denmark, bordered by the Baltic Sea to the east and open farmland to the west. Store Heddinge is the main town and hosts the municipal offices along with a small but active town center.
Store Heddinge was founded in the 13th century and grew into the main settlement of the surrounding area over the following centuries. In 2007, the former municipalities of Stevns and Vallø were merged into one as part of a nationwide reform of local government in Denmark.
The local church in Store Heddinge is built from the same white limestone found along the nearby coast, giving the town a coherent, earthy look. Many residents still work the land or fish nearby, and the pace of daily life follows the seasons more than the clock.
Exploring the area by car is the easiest option, as the villages and the coastline are spread out across the landscape. Those without a car can reach Store Heddinge by bus, but reaching more remote parts of the coast requires extra planning.
The cliffs at Stevns Klint contain a thin dark clay layer that marks the exact boundary between two geological periods, preserving the moment when an asteroid impact changed life on Earth around 66 million years ago. This layer is visible to the naked eye directly in the cliff face, making it a reference site for geologists from around the world.
