Cold war museum Stevnsfort, Military museum and fort in Stevns Municipality, Denmark
Stevnsfort is a military defense installation located beneath the ground along the Zealand coast. It consists of interconnected bunkers, rooms for missile systems, and gun positions that spread across the fortification to monitor the sea.
The installation was built in the early 1950s when Scandinavia faced Soviet threats. It played a key role in Denmark's strategy to monitor sea routes and protect its territory from the east.
The underground fort tells the story of how Denmark prepared to defend itself during the Cold War era. Visitors can see the spaces where military personnel worked and learn what daily security operations looked like in this fortified complex.
The museum is about one hour from Copenhagen by car or train and offers guided tours through the fortification. Wear comfortable shoes since you will descend many stairs and walk through narrow passages underground.
Inside stand three air defense missiles from an American program that were meant to protect Copenhagen. They show how closely Danish and American military plans were linked during that era.
