ABC Teatret, Private theatre in Frederiksberg Municipality, Denmark
ABC Teatret is a theatre at the corner of Dr. Priemes Vej and Frederiksberg Alle in Frederiksberg Municipality, Denmark. The building has a main auditorium with around 775 seats and served as a performance venue for over six decades.
The building opened in 1932 under the name Montmartre, first as a decorated pavilion and then converted into a theatre. It remained active until 1997, living through the German occupation of Copenhagen and the postwar years of Danish entertainment.
Under Stig Lommer's direction from 1949, the venue became a regular stage for Danish comedy, with performers like Kjeld Petersen and Dirch Passer drawing loyal audiences. Those evenings shaped a shared sense of humor and entertainment that many Danes of that generation still associate with Frederiksberg.
The building sits in the central part of Frederiksberg, a district that borders Copenhagen and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. Those wanting to see it from outside will find it at the corner of Frederiksberg Alle, one of the area's main streets.
On March 21, 1945, the Royal Air Force bombed the nearby Shellhuset, an attack that accidentally hit other buildings in the area, yet left this theatre untouched. The original pavilion had a Moorish interior design that was still visible after the conversion, giving the hall an unusual look for a Danish venue.
