The Prehistoric Trail, Archaeological hiking trail in Aarhus Municipality, Denmark
The Prehistoric Trail is a hiking path in Aarhus Municipality that stretches across four kilometers through Moesgård forests and alongside the Giberåen river. The route passes ancient burial mounds and stone formations before reaching a beach near a historic estate.
The trail contains multiple burial mounds and stone structures built by the region's earliest inhabitants during the Stone Age and into later periods. These remains show where ancient communities chose to settle and honor their dead.
White stone markers with red dots guide hikers through changing landscapes, while information panels along the route explain what ancient people left behind and how they lived in this region.
The trail is well-marked and requires moderate physical effort with some elevation changes along the way. A restaurant near the route provides a place to rest and grab refreshments before or after your walk.
Two important megalithic tombs, Kobberupkisten and Stigsnæsdyssen, were moved to their current location to protect them from damage over time. Visitors can see these rare structures up close and notice the careful stonework of ancient builders.
