Laghouat, Oasis city in north-central Algeria

Located at the intersection of the Sahara Desert and Saharan Atlas Mountains, Laghouat extends across two hills near Mount Tizigarine at 769 meters elevation point.

The settlement started in the 11th century by Banū Hilāl tribes and underwent control changes between Moroccan, Turkish, and French authorities until Algeria's independence in 1962.

The city preserves traditional Saharan architecture on its northern hill, including the cathedral of the bishop of the Sahara and local artisans create wall hangings and woolen carpets.

Three dams on the Wadi Mzi river supply irrigation systems that support the cultivation of date palms, fruit trees, vegetables, and cereals across 253 hectares.

Laghouat contains the Hassi R'Mel region, which holds the second largest natural gas reserves in Africa, making it crucial for Algeria's energy sector.
