Staouéli, Coastal commune in Zéralda District, Algeria
Staouéli is a town on the Mediterranean coast in northwestern Algeria, west of Algiers, in the Zéralda District. It sits close to the shore and is made up of a mix of residential neighborhoods and sandy beaches facing the sea.
The land around Staouéli was where French forces landed in 1830, just before taking Algiers, making it a turning point in the country's colonial history. Trappist monks later settled here and built an abbey along with farms that shaped the local landscape for decades.
The town draws its character from fishing traditions that continue to shape daily life and community bonds. Local markets display handcrafted items and regional goods that reflect the people's connection to the sea.
Staouéli is about 15 miles (25 km) west of Algiers and can be reached by road or public transport without difficulty. The beaches are easy to reach on foot from the main road, and a weekday visit outside the summer months makes the most of the quieter shoreline.
In the 1920s, a Grand Prix motor race was held near Staouéli, making it one of the few places in North Africa to host an international motorsport event at that time. Very few visitors are aware of this chapter of local history, and little visible trace of it remains today.
