The provincial name reflects both Arabic and regional influences, with In Salah deriving from the Arabic term Ain Salah, meaning good spring.

The province maintains an administrative center in In Salah city, where government services operate under the direction of an appointed Wali.

With only 0.38 inhabitants per square kilometer, In Salah Province presents one of the lowest population densities in northern Africa.
