Tell el-Maschuta, Archaeological site in Ismailia Governorate, Egypt

Tell el-Maschuta is an archaeological site near the Suez region with remains from multiple periods of occupation layered one above another. Excavations reveal ancient walls, defensive slopes, and fortification structures that show the different eras of settlement.

The settlement reached its peak during Egypt's Late Period and the Greco-Roman era, when it served as a major trade hub. This period shaped the physical remains that archaeologists uncover today.

The pottery and amphorae discovered here show how Egyptian and Roman influences mixed in the daily life of people who lived at this location. You can see in these objects how trade and exchange shaped the community.

The site is located in open landscape and can be accessed where archaeological missions regularly conduct excavations. Visitors should prepare for the dry heat of the region and bring sun protection and sturdy footwear suitable for uneven ground.

A massive defensive slope once protected a military fortress and allowed officials to collect customs fees from merchant caravans traveling through the region. This dual purpose shows how security and commerce were linked together.
