Montazah Park, Royal garden complex in Alexandria, Egypt
Montazah Park is a large green space stretching along Alexandria's coastline with two palace buildings and manicured gardens throughout. The grounds blend Ottoman and Italian architectural styles while offering extensive walkways and planted areas to explore.
The park was founded in 1892 by Khedive Abbas II, who built the Salamlek Palace as a hunting lodge on the site. King Fuad I later expanded the grounds by constructing the Al-Haramlik Palace, adding a second major structure to the complex.
The park transformed from an exclusive royal retreat into a public gathering place where everyone can walk freely through the grounds. Today, it serves as a connection to Egypt's monarchy and remains central to how locals spend their leisure time by the sea.
The park is located at the northeastern end of Alexandria and welcomes visitors on most days. Wear comfortable shoes since the pathways cover a large area, and bring sun protection as the coastal location means open exposure throughout your visit.
One of the two palaces on the grounds, Salamlek, operates today as a luxury hotel where guests can stay overnight. The other palace, Al-Haramlik, functions as a museum dedicated to the Muhammad Ali dynasty, allowing visitors to see how royal families once lived.
