Tjaru, Military fortress in Sinai Peninsula, Egypt

The fortress spans an area of 500 by 250 meters, protected by thirteen-meter-thick mud brick walls and twenty-four watchtowers across its parapets.

The fortress served as Egypt's main defense point along the Way of Horus during the New Kingdom period from 1550 to 1069 BC.

The site contained a temple dedicated to Horus of Mesen, who was worshipped in the form of a lion within the fortress walls.

The excavation area at Tell Heboua reveals military structures, including soldier graves, defensive walls, and a water-filled moat system.

The fortress functioned as a banishment location where Egyptian authorities sent criminals for punishment during the New Kingdom period.
