Gilf Kebir National Park, National park in New Valley Governorate, Egypt.
The Gilf Kebir plateau rises 300 meters above the Libyan Desert floor, covering 48,533 square kilometers of sandstone formations and sand dunes.
The park contains ancient rock art dating back 9,000 years, depicting evidence of human settlements during a period when the region experienced different climate conditions.
The caves of Beasts, Swimmers, Archers, and Magharet el Kantara contain extensive collections of Neolithic rock paintings that document prehistoric life in the region.
Visitors require special permits, four-wheel drive vehicles, and experienced guides to navigate this remote desert region, which receives minimal rainfall throughout the year.
The southwestern section contains the Silica Glass area, where pure glass fragments formed 30 million years ago from a meteorite or comet impact scatter the desert floor.
