Wikala of Qaytbay, Trade building in Hayy al-Azhar district, Egypt.
The Wikala of Qaytbay stands 25 meters tall with stone walls, decorated portals, and wooden mashrabiyyas overlooking a central courtyard with storage rooms.
The structure was established in 1481 by Sultan al-Ashraf Abu al-Nasr Qaitbay during a period of economic growth in the Mamluk Empire.
The building design combines residential apartments and merchant spaces, reflecting the social structure and commercial practices of medieval Cairo.
The Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities conducts restoration work on the building, which includes preservation of the stone portal and interior living quarters.
The structure features a dual-level apartment system where each residential unit contains specific areas for social gatherings and private family activities.
