Avilés, Coastal city in Asturias, Spain
Avilés is a city in northern Spain on the coast of Asturias with a medieval core and a working industrial port. The old town contains several interconnected plazas surrounded by arcaded buildings, while modern districts extend toward the estuary and harbor areas.
The city received a charter in 1155 that freed its inhabitants from feudal duties and granted certain rights of self-governance. In later centuries, it grew into an important port and industrial center in Asturias.
The Centro Niemeyer, designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, stands as a modern arts center transforming the urban landscape of Avilés.
A walk through the center is best started from Plaza de España and continues through several connected streets with historic facades. The nearby beaches are easily reached by local bus or a short drive.
Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who founded St. Augustine in Florida during the 16th century, was born in this city and is buried in the Church of San Tomás. His tomb links Spanish history with early North American colonial events.
