The church features stone barrel vaults reaching seven meters high, horseshoe arches, and large splayed windows with stone lintels in doorways.
Santa María de Melque was constructed between the late 7th and early 8th centuries as part of a 25-hectare self-sufficient monastery complex.
The church incorporates architectural elements from late Roman techniques while displaying Eastern Christian influences from present-day Syria and Jordan.
The church opens Wednesday through Sunday, with winter hours from 10:00 to 19:00 and summer hours from 11:00 to 20:00.
Five dams surrounded the monastery complex, storing water and irrigating valley terraces across a 7,000-square-meter area adapted to the terrain.
