Montejurra, Mountain summit in Estella-Lizarra, Spain
Montejurra is a mountain summit in the Basque Mountains near Estella-Lizarra, in the region of Navarra, rising to 1,042 meters above sea level. Several hiking trails lead to the top from different starting points around the base.
In 1873, during the Third Carlist War, the slopes of the mountain were the site of a major military confrontation that marked the history of Navarra. Over a century later, in 1976, a commemoration held on the mountain turned violent and left a deep mark on local memory.
Each spring, the mountain draws supporters of the Carlist movement for a gathering that blends political memory with outdoor tradition. The event is still observed today and gives the mountain a meaning beyond its natural setting.
The trails are steep and demand solid footwear and enough water for a climb that takes several hours. Starting early in the morning is a good idea, especially in summer when midday heat can make the ascent harder.
Between 1960 and 1971, a monthly magazine took its name from the mountain and served as one of the few public voices of the Carlist movement during that period. The publication helped spread political ideas at a time when open debate was tightly controlled in Spain.
