Bodegas Irache, 19th-century wine estate in Ayegui, Spain
Bodegas Irache extends across 150 hectares of vineyards at the foot of Mount Montejurra, cultivating Tempranillo, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viura, Chardonnay, and Malvasia grapes.
King Sancho IV of Navarre donated the original vineyards to the Monastery of Irache in 1072, establishing a tradition of viticulture that continues through the present winery founded in 1891.
The winery museum displays over 200 pieces of historical equipment and wine bottles from significant vintages, demonstrating the evolution of winemaking techniques through generations.
The modern production facility contains stainless steel temperature-controlled vats with a total capacity of 1.7 million liters and produces 6,000 bottles per hour.
The wine fountain built in 1991 along the Way of Saint James provides free wine to passing pilgrims, following a centuries-old tradition of hospitality.
