Plaza de la Merced, Historic square in Centro, Spain
The Plaza de la Merced extends through the heart of Malaga with marble benches, monuments, and surrounding historical buildings forming a rectangular layout.
The square functioned as a public market during the 15th century, positioned outside the city walls near the entrance known as La Puerta de Granada.
Number 15 of the plaza houses the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, which now operates as a museum under the Pablo Ruiz Picasso Foundation.
The square connects directly to multiple bus lines and provides access to numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops in the surrounding streets.
A bronze statue created by Francisco López Hernández depicts Pablo Picasso sitting on a marble bench while taking notes in the plaza.

Between the Mediterranean and the Andalusian hills, Malaga blends southern warmth with a thousand-year history. Birthplace of Picasso, it combines Moorish fortresses, Renaissance churches, orange-scented alleys, and avant-garde museums. The Alcazaba overlooks the city from its Moorish walls, the Roman theater recalls its origins, and the Cathedral of the Incarnation connects the centuries. Along the port, the Pompidou Center, contemporary galleries, and subtropical gardens revitalize Andalusian modernity. The stroll is slow, between white light and warm shadows, from the Atarazanas market to the views of Gibralfaro. Malaga is no longer just a seaside stopover: it is a city to explore, to see, and to feel.
